Recent Travels & Future Trips: Planning Ahead

How To Plan To Travel

We each have our countries we think about often. We wonder what it would be like to explore them one day and we contemplate if we can actually make some of the trips happen. I usually run quite a long list in my head but I also keep space open throughout the year for traveling to my choice countries like Mexico and Costa Rica. The list of countries shift and change depending on prices, the seasons and of course timing. Lately, the top of my list has been countries in Central and South America with thriving jungles and memorizing beaches. But more importantly these countries are my go to’s because of their price. But unlike normal years we have been exposed to some of the best travel deals we have ever been able to take advantage of.

Traveling during covid has been hectic but also extremely advantageous. My dream travel list as I call it has been changing and getting smaller in the very best way. The opportunities with discounted travel this past year has had me dreaming big. Usually the budget controls where and when I can travel but covid has shaken everything up. You can find discounted travel just about anywhere. This past 2021 year I went to Turks & Caicos for less than $2k, ran around Disney World with zero crowds and experienced the lowest hotel rate ever in South Beach Miami.

My travel list has been shifting with some of the countries a little lower on the list climbing to the top because of these budget opportunities. In fall of 2021 I saw Greece for $650 and couldn't say no. Europe is on just about everyone's minds these days as it remains one of the ultimate travel destinations. So when I confirmed the Greece budget was possible, it actually became a dream come true.

I have always loved hopping around and exploring different areas, cultures and cities all in the same trip. I am far from the resort traveler who stays at the hotel pool and never gets a rental car. I pack it in. I have a list that I have to narrow down again and again. Because I spend hours and hours researching and planning so I can see and experience the most I possibly can.

My advice, plan ahead.

Have a list of multiple different places and experiences through the year that you can check up on. Every once in a while go on google flights or the vendor of your choice and research your destination. The chances are very high that you will come across some sort of deal to get you out there. Most tours and cruises like Contiki and Princess plan 2 years out. Most of these even offer payment plans and early bird booking rates. Take advantage of these deals with extra perks.

The planning can start now or whenever you feel like it. I usually start with saving places on a Google Maps List. I see a video or maybe a picture of an experience somewhere and then I go and save the location on a Google Maps List. Then as I read and learn more about the sites and must see’s I create a Google Doc. I start with bullet points of all the places and then research how long it takes to get to and from them. Then to put it all together, I create a loose itinerary on my google doc. I plan if we’re in a certain area or city, to hit all the spots close by. Also, I create sample itinerary days, so just in case it rains and we can’t do a beach hopping route we have other back up plans. In all, the most important part of traveling is seeing your favorite places and doing the experiences you desire. So take a little time and start planning now :)
