How To Explore Athens In 24hrs

Travel Guide To Athens, Greece

Take the train from the airport to the heart of the city.

Get off at Monastiraki Station. You will pop out of the station in the heart of the Monastiraki Square the historical center of the city. There are numerous shops, authentic restaurants and a vibrant art district. Visit here for a truly Athens culture experience.

Explore the city center of Athens. Grab lunch at roof top restaurant and take in the view of the Acropolis high up on the hill above.

My favorite roof top restaurants:

- MS Roof Garden

- Couleur Locale

Walk Philippou Hill visiting different ancient monuments and The Prison of Socrates

There are multiple clearly marked paths to take from the base of the hill up to the top. The walk is about 15 minutes and mostly paved. As you walk along the path you can view the Acropolis and get a 360 view of the city.

Start your walk to the Acropolis from the Museum

First walk the museums free sections to understand the monuments and temples of the Acropolis. Grab a quick drink from the museum cafe. Then start you ascent to the top of the Acropolis along the paved road directly from the Acropolis Museum.

Tip: I recommend buying your ticket ahead of time to beat the lines at the entrance.

Lastly, take the Athens Hop On Hop Off Bus around the city

There are 3 different routes that run through the city and its coast, make sure to do all 3. My favorite route was the coastal and Athens riviera.

Tips

  1. Train From Airport to City Center - Monastiraki Station from Athens International Airport is easy and efficient. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the heart of the city.

  2. Luggage Storage APPs - If you need to store your luggage for the day or just for a couple hours before checking into your Airbnb you can use numerous different Apps. Most of the hotels and train stations offer these services. I personally used Radical Storage for a couple hours so I could explore the city before I could check into my Airbnb. It's affordable and convenient.
